Charity Sailing Race
I've agreed to crew on the Prostate UK yacht in this years Cowes Round the Island Race!!! Although I've only ever sailed on flotilla around the Greek Islands (apart from the time I nearly died on my brother-in-laws brand-new yacht when its gearbox blew up in the Bay of Lyon and we were hammered by a force 10 gale for 12 hours with absolutely no control- a night so bad that my wife Kay tried to throw up in a frying pan – all other receptacles having been already commandeered ) I thought it would be exciting and its for a fantastic cause . I've since seen the film of last years race and the one essential item I'm allowed on board will be a pack of Pampers. See for yourself :-
  • The 55 nautical mile Round the Island Race is the fourth largest sporting event in the UK after the Flora London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs
  • Other people racing this year include Dame Ellen MacArthur, Alex Thomson, Robin Knox-Johnston and Olympic sailors: Nick Rogers, Joe Glanfield, Paul Goodison, Ben Ainslie and Shirley Robertson
  • 1,875 boats competed in 2008 – the highest entry to date
  • 13,000 people are expected to participate in the 2009 Race
  • Exciting boats to watch out for include the Extreme 40s and 100ft race boat Leopard, owner Mike Slade who last year beat his own Mononhull race record, completing the course in 3 hours 53 minutes 5 seconds
